I agree w/Lan, SeanPa, I don't think there's any question there was such a plan in the works, but as to how close it actually came to being attempted, my suspicion is not very. And its chance of success would have been almost nil. But there really isn't much evidence to go by either way.

I do love that quote by Smedley Butler. This wasn't the ramblings of some socialist college professor. This was from a man who had been there and understood it far better than anyone else.

It's hard to go through history and find a war that wasn't a racket. Even most of the "religious " wars, at the end of the day, were about some type of land-grab. But of course, you can't sell it to the people that way, so you inject morality into it. From our own history, the Phillipine War and the Spanish-American war are wonderful examples of this.

General Smedley Darlington Butler is an interesting chap.

Smedley Darlington Butler (July 30, 1881 ? June 21, 1940), nicknamed "The Fighting Quaker" and "Old Gimlet Eye", Major General in the U.S. Marine Corps and, at the time of his death, the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. During his 34 years of Marine Corps service, Butler was awarded numerous medals for heroism including the Marine Corps Brevet Medal (the highest Marine medal at its time for officers), and subsequently the Medal of Honor twice.
